Model Local Rule E-3: Preferred lies
Model Local Rule E-3 will now be incorporated from 02nd October 2025 until further notice. Please check all noticeboards and messages from BRS before you play.
MODEL LOCAL RULE E-3 PREFERRED LIES.
When any part of a player’s ball touches or lies in a part of a general cut area to fairway height or less, the player may take relief once by placing the original ball or another ball and playing it from this relief area:
- Reference point: Spot of the original ball.
- Size of Relief Area measured from Reference Point: 150 mm (6 inches) from the reference point but with these limits:

- Must not be nearer the hole than the reference point, and,
- Must be in the general area (throughout the course).

Procedure: The ball should be marked, lifted, cleaned if desired, and placed on a spot within the relief area.
Penalty for playing ball from wrong place: General penalty Loss of hole in match play or two strokes in Stroke play.
